How salary tax works
Your gross salary is what your employer pays. Out of that, two main things come off before money hits your bank: income tax, applied through progressive brackets after a personal allowance, and social contributions — pension, healthcare, and unemployment insurance. The remainder is your net (take-home) pay. Effective tax rate is your total deductions divided by gross income; marginal rate is what you'd pay on the next dollar earned.
